Description
Seen from the medial aspect of an adult male foot, the first through fifth metatarsals extend distally from the tarsus toward the proximal phalanges, with the first metatarsal appearing broader and more plantar robust than the lateral rays. Proximally, the base of the first metatarsal abuts the medial cuneiform, while the bases of the second and third align with the intermediate and lateral cuneiforms and the fourth and fifth articulate with the cuboid. Medially, the hallux phalanges and first metatarsophalangeal joint sit anterior to the navicular and talus, and the calcaneus forms the posterior pillar of the hindfoot. Clear bony relationships. A medial view is the workhorse perspective for teaching and planning around the medial longitudinal arch, because it puts the talus, navicular, medial cuneiform, and first metatarsal in one line of sight and makes arch collapse patterns easier to explain than in a dorsal view.
