Description
Plantar aspect of the male foot skeleton is presented with the calcaneus positioned posteriorly and the talus seated superiorly within the hindfoot, articulating anteriorly with the navicular on the medial side and the cuboid laterally. Distal to the midtarsus, the three cuneiforms align medial to lateral with the bases of metatarsals I to III, while the cuboid supports metatarsals IV and V along the lateral column. The phalanges extend distally from the metatarsal heads, and selective blue highlighting draws attention to the phalanges of the second, third, and fourth toes. Articular cartilage is indicated at the tarsometatarsal, metatarsophalangeal, and interphalangeal joints. Clear landmarks. An inferior view like this reads the architecture of the longitudinal and transverse arches directly off the bony columns, making it well suited for teaching how the medial arch (calcaneus, talus, navicular, cuneiforms, first metatarsal) differs mechanically from the lateral arch (calcaneus, cuboid, fourth and fifth metatarsals). That distinction matters in common clinical problems, from plantar fasciitis and adult acquired flatfoot related to posterior tibial tendon dysfunction to cavus alignment that shifts load laterally. The tarsometatarsal region is also a surgical and radiographic focal point, since Lisfranc injuries disrupt the cuneiform-metatarsal articulation and can be subtle without a firm grasp of normal alignment. Podiatry, orthopaedic anatomy, and radiographic positioning courses can use this plate to correlate palpation landmarks with joint lines and to support figure captions on metatarsal and phalangeal fracture patterns, hallux alignment, and lesser-toe deformities. It also fits operative planning discussions for midfoot arthrodesis and forefoot procedures where joint congruity and column length matter.
