Description
Dorsal foot musculature is presented from a superior perspective, spanning the tarsus, metatarsus, and phalanges in a male adult specimen. Along the anterior ankle, the tendons of tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, extensor digitorum longus, and fibularis (peroneus) tertius course distally beneath the extensor retinacula, then fan out toward the medial cuneiform and first metatarsal, the distal phalanx of the hallux, and the extensor expansions of digits 2 to 5. More distally on the dorsum, the extensor digitorum brevis and extensor hallucis brevis sit superficial to the tarsometatarsal region, sending short muscular slips toward the lateral toes and proximal phalanx of the hallux. Clear layering. This superior, dorsal view matters because it mirrors the surgical and clinical surface anatomy used when addressing extensor tendon lacerations, dorsal midfoot ganglion excision, and approaches to the tarsometatarsal (Lisfranc) joints. Tendon trajectory and compartmental organization at the ankle help clarify why extensor hallucis longus dysfunction alters hallux dorsiflexion and why dorsal swelling can tether tendons under the retinaculum, producing painful toe extension. It is also the easiest angle for teaching how the long extensors transition from leg to foot and where they insert relative to the metatarsals and phalanges. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and lower limb dissection teaching, podiatry and orthopaedic lectures on the dorsal ankle and midfoot, and in surgical textbooks illustrating dorsal approaches and tendon repair landmarks.
