Description
Oriented from an anterior perspective, the hand skeleton is presented with the metacarpals centrally and the distal carpal row proximally, while the phalanges extend distally into the digits. Longitudinal fibrous bands corresponding to the dorsal metacarpal ligaments course along the dorsal aspects of the metacarpal shafts, appearing through the transparent planes of the model and aligning toward the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints. Intermetacarpal connections at the bases and heads, along with the carpal architecture (including capitate, hamate, trapezoid, and trapezium), frame these bands and clarify their relationship to the metacarpal rays. White ligamentous structures contrast with blue connective tissue or articular cartilage at joint margins. This orientation is useful when you need to reconcile dorsal stabilizers with palmar surgical or imaging landmarks, because the dorsal ligament complex and dorsal capsule influence MCP joint congruency even when approached from the volar side. Dorsal MCP pain after a “jammed finger” often involves capsuloligamentous sprain and can coexist with sagittal band injury of the extensor hood, so appreciating the dorsal longitudinal restraints relative to the metacarpal heads helps explain why swelling and loss of extension can persist. Small dorsal avulsion fragments at the metacarpal head or base on radiographs also make more sense when the dorsal ligament attachments are mentally mapped. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and hand anatomy teaching to contrast dorsal ligament architecture with the palmar plate, deep transverse metacarpal ligament, and flexor tendon sheaths, or in orthopaedic and plastic surgery materials discussing MCP joint trauma, metacarpal fractures, and dorsal approach intervals. It also fits radiology and sports medicine content that correlates dorsal hand pain patterns with ligament sprain and post-traumatic instability.
