Description
Cerebral cortex on the superolateral aspect of a human cerebral hemisphere fills the frame, oriented to a lateral viewpoint that exposes the convexity from frontal pole to occipital pole. Major sulci carve the surface, with the sulcus centralis separating the gyrus precentralis anteriorly from the gyrus postcentralis posteriorly, and the fissura lateralis (Sylvian fissure) running obliquely to demarcate the lateral temporal lobe inferiorly from frontal and parietal opercular cortex superiorly. Frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes can be localized by these landmarks, with secondary grooves such as the sulcus intraparietalis and the superior and inferior frontal sulci guiding identification of adjacent gyri. Gyri dominate this surface. Clinical work often begins on the superolateral convexity because it is the territory exposed in standard pterional, frontotemporal, and parietal craniotomies, and because it overlies the middle cerebral artery distribution where ischemic stroke commonly produces contralateral face and upper limb weakness, sensory loss, and aphasia in the dominant hemisphere. The relationship between the precentral gyrus, postcentral gyrus, and the posterior ramus of the lateral fissure supports accurate teaching of the motor and somatosensory homunculi and the perisylvian language network. Surface anatomy matters when correlating deficits with lesion location. Consistent lighting and a cortex-only emphasis keep sulcal boundaries readable for neuroanatomy instruction. Neuroscience courses covering the telencephalon, neuropsychology modules on cortical localization, and medical publisher figures on cortical lobes and sulci will all benefit from this illustration as a baseline lateral map of the cerebrum.
