Description
Superior margin of the cerebral hemisphere forms the convex dorsomedial ridge that flanks the longitudinal fissure on a top-down (superior) view of the human cerebrum. Along this border, the medial surfaces of the right and left hemispheres approach one another, separated by the interhemispheric fissure where the falx cerebri and superior sagittal sinus reside in vivo. Adjacent cortical territories typically visible near the margin include the superior frontal gyrus anteriorly, the precentral and postcentral gyri around the central sulcus, and the superior parietal lobule transitioning posteriorly toward the occipital lobe. Sulci and gyri provide the surface relief. For neuroanatomy teaching, the superior margin is a dependable orientation landmark because it brackets the midline and frames where venous dural sinuses course, a relationship that matters when correlating cortical surface anatomy with midline pathology. Parasagittal lesions, including meningiomas arising from the falx or masses compressing the superior sagittal sinus, can produce leg-predominant motor or sensory findings due to proximity of the paracentral lobule on the medial hemisphere, just inferior to this border. A fixed superior perspective keeps the midline reference consistent, making it easier to map named gyri to the expected anterior to posterior sequence without getting distracted by the more complex basal surface anatomy.
