Description
Cerebral cortex on the superolateral surface of a human cerebral hemisphere is presented from a lateral aspect, allowing the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes to be read as a continuous convex field. Superiorly, the superior frontal gyrus and superior parietal lobule approach the superomedial margin, while inferiorly the lateral sulcus (Sylvian fissure) separates the frontal and parietal opercula from the superior temporal gyrus. The central sulcus runs obliquely from superomedial toward inferoanterior, placing the precentral gyrus immediately anterior (primary motor cortex) and the postcentral gyrus immediately posterior (primary somatosensory cortex). Posteriorly, the intraparietal sulcus partitions the parietal lobule, and the temporo-occipital transition is suggested by the posterior end of the superior temporal sulcus and the lateral occipital gyri. Surface anatomy on this face of the telencephalon is the map most often used to localize cortical function at the bedside and in the operating room. Motor and sensory deficits from middle cerebral artery infarction correlate tightly with the precentral and postcentral gyri on this superolateral convexity, while peri-Sylvian language regions align with the inferior frontal gyrus (Broca area, dominant hemisphere) and posterior superior temporal region (Wernicke area). Landmarks matter. Crisp sulcal relief and consistent gyral proportions help learners distinguish true anatomic boundaries from individual variation, a recurring problem when correlating neurologic exam findings with CT or MRI. Neuroanatomy and neurophysiology courses can pair this illustration with homunculus teaching, cortical column discussions, or lesion localization exercises centered on the central sulcus and peri-Sylvian cortex.
