Description
Arising from the C7 spinal nerve root, the middle trunk of the brachial plexus is shown in anterior view as it emerges between the anterior and middle scalene muscles and descends toward the root of the neck. Superficial landmarks include the sternocleidomastoid coursing obliquely over the lateral cervical region, with platysma and deep cervical fascia framing the supraclavicular fossa. Inferiorly, the clavicle spans the anterior thoracic inlet, while the neural elements track lateral to the cervical viscera and deep to the superficial venous plane, consistent with the prevertebral compartment. For teaching and operative planning, isolating the middle trunk matters because it is the only trunk formed exclusively from a single root, C7, and it anchors myotomal and dermatomal correlations in the upper limb. C7 radiculopathy can mimic plexopathy, and this anterior corridor illustrates where a C7 contribution transitions into plexus anatomy, the zone interrogated during supraclavicular brachial plexus block and exposed in approaches for thoracic outlet syndrome or plexus exploration.
