Description
Oriented from an anterior angle in a male neck and shoulder, the C8 spinal nerve root is visualized emerging inferior to the C7 root and immediately superior to the T1 root, converging toward the lower trunk of the brachial plexus. Proximally, the root is related to the lower cervical vertebral region and courses laterally toward the scalene interval, deep to the sternocleidomastoid and anterior to the more posterior cervical musculature. Distally, the nerve bundle projects toward the supraclavicular fossa where the clavicle forms an anterior bony landmark as the plexus transitions toward the axilla. Color coding separates nerves, muscle bellies, and osseous elements for rapid orientation. C8 matters because it carries a large share of the fibers that will become the ulnar nerve and the medial contribution to the median nerve, and its functional territory is heavily represented in hand intrinsic strength and finger flexion. A lower trunk or C8 radiculopathy pattern, classically from foraminal stenosis or a lower cervical disc herniation, can mimic ulnar neuropathy unless you keep the root level in mind. This anterior perspective also supports teaching of traction-type brachial plexus injuries, where depression of the shoulder with contralateral neck flexion stresses the C8 to T1 elements. Faculty can drop this plate into gross anatomy lab guides, neuroanatomy lectures on brachial plexus organization (roots to trunks), or clinical skills materials that correlate dermatomes and myotomes with focal weakness patterns. It also suits surgical anatomy references for supraclavicular exposure and regional anesthesia education when explaining why lower trunk involvement produces medial forearm and hand findings.
