Description
Running from the cervical region into the upper abdomen, the superficial and deep lymphatic vessels are rendered in an x-ray style over a semi-transparent male torso, with the clavicles, ribs, sternum, and thoracic vertebrae visible beneath. Cervical lymph nodes cluster superiorly along the internal jugular chain, while axillary nodes sit lateral to the pectoral region and receive lymphatics ascending from the upper limb and chest wall. Medially, a vertical pathway along the mediastinum suggests the thoracic duct and adjacent lymphatic trunks, positioned posterior to the sternum and anterior to the vertebral column before coursing toward the left venous angle. Inguinal nodes appear inferiorly at the groin, marking the transition to the lower abdominal drainage territories. Anterior orientation matters for teaching drainage patterns that clinicians palpate and surgeons respect. Reactive cervical or axillary lymphadenopathy is common, but the deeper story is the predictable spread of breast carcinoma to pectoral (anterior) axillary nodes and then to apical nodes near the axillary vein, a route that guides sentinel lymph node biopsy and staging.
