Description
Oriented palm-up in a true anterior (volar) perspective, the wrist is opened to the palmar radiocarpal ligament complex spanning from the distal radius toward the proximal carpal row. Fibrous bands course distally and slightly ulnarly toward the scaphoid, lunate, and triquetrum, blending with the palmar capsule and adjacent ulnocarpal ligament fibers near the ulnar head and triangular fibrocartilage region. Distal to the carpus, metacarpals and phalanges provide bony context, while volar tendons traverse the carpal tunnel region superficial to the carpal bones and deep to the flexor retinaculum footprint. Blue highlighting isolates select ligamentous elements for rapid orientation. Palmar radiocarpal and ulnocarpal ligaments are the primary checkreins to dorsal translation of the carpus and to excessive wrist extension, and their fiber direction explains why a dorsiflexion injury can produce a predictable pattern of capsuloligamentous strain.
