Description
Seen from the anterior aspect of the male upper thorax, the superior thoracic vein is traced superficially along the upper chest wall where it collects venous blood from the first and second intercostal spaces. Its tributaries course between the ribs near the costal cartilages, then converge toward the lateral margin of the sternum and the anterior axillary region before draining into the axillary vein near the inferior border of the pectoralis minor. Bony landmarks include the clavicles, scapulae, and rib cage, with the vein running anterior to the ribs and intercostal muscles. Color coding separates venous channels from adjacent arterial pathways in the same field. For teaching the venous drainage of the anterior thoracic wall, this view clarifies how the superior thoracic vein complements deeper intercostal drainage routes that ultimately communicate with the azygos system. Small vessel, big relevance. Clinically, these superficial and deep venous pathways become more prominent with proximal axillary or subclavian vein obstruction, and they matter during infraclavicular access or pacemaker pocket creation where unexpected bleeding from thoracic wall tributaries can complicate dissection.
