Description
Viewed from the anterior aspect of the elbow, the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) spans from the medial epicondyle of the distal humerus to the ulna, with the taut anterior bundle coursing anteroinferiorly toward the sublime tubercle on the medial margin of the coronoid process. A thinner posterior component tracks more posteriorly along the medial joint line toward the medial olecranon, blending with the capsular tissues. Lateral to the UCL, the radial head articulates with the capitulum while the trochlea engages the trochlear notch of the ulna, their cartilage-covered surfaces defining the humeroulnar hinge. Medial stability is the theme. Valgus load at the elbow concentrates on the anterior bundle, which is why this specific anterior perspective matters for throwing athletes and for surgeons performing UCL reconstruction.
