Description
Presented in an anterior, bisected view of the male knee, the proximal tibia is centered with its tibial tuberosity and sharp anterior border (tibial crest) leading inferiorly toward a jagged fracture line just distal to the tuberosity. Laterally, the fibular head sits posterolateral to the tibial plateau, while the distal femur is sectioned superiorly to expose the femoral condyles and intercondylar region. Metallic arthroplasty components cap the femoral condyles and resurface the tibial plateau, with the fracture highlighted in red as it propagates through cancellous bone toward the joint line. Periprosthetic fracture around a total knee arthroplasty is a specific problem, and an anterior perspective makes the relationship between the tibial tuberosity, implant-bone interface, and extensor mechanism traction forces easy to teach. Stress risers near the tibial component, osteolysis, or low-energy torsion can convert a seemingly minor fall into a displaced proximal tibial fracture, and the proximity to the tibial tuberosity raises immediate questions about patellar tendon continuity and postoperative extension lag. Implant stability matters here. A fracture that undermines tibial baseplate support often changes management from simple fixation to revision arthroplasty strategies. Use this artwork in orthopaedic trauma teaching (proximal tibia and periprosthetic fractures), arthroplasty complication chapters, and patient-safety or morbidity and mortality presentations where clear correlation between hardware position and fracture morphology is needed.
