Description
Centered within a semi-transparent male lower torso, the large intestine frames the coiled small intestine in anterior anatomical position, with the ascending colon on the subject’s right, the transverse colon spanning superiorly, and the descending colon on the subject’s left. The hepatic flexure sits in the right upper quadrant, where the colon turns from ascending to transverse beneath the inferior margin of the liver, while the splenic flexure lies more superior and posterior on the left near the spleen. Haustra and the segmented contour of the bowel wall define the colon’s external morphology, continuing inferiorly into the sigmoid colon and rectum in the midline pelvis. Spatial relationships read cleanly from proximal cecum toward distal rectum. Anterior mapping like this matters when you are teaching quadrant-based abdominal assessment and when you need to anticipate where colonic pathology will refer pain or generate tenderness on palpation. Right-sided disease (for example, cecal or ascending colon carcinoma) often presents differently from left-sided obstruction, and the hepatic flexure is a common site where colonoscopy can be technically challenging because the lumen angulates under the liver and near the gallbladder bed.
