Deep Lymphatics of the Leg Without the Muscles, Anterior View

Description

Running along the anterior compartment with the musculature removed, the deep lymphatic vessels of the male leg track in close company with the anterior tibial artery and veins, then continue distally across the ankle toward the dorsal foot. Medially, the tibia forms the dominant bony landmark from the knee to the medial malleolus, while the fibula lies lateral and slightly posterior, framing the interosseous space where the anterior tibial neurovascular bundle typically emerges. Proximal to the leg, the distal femur and knee joint line orient the viewer to the superior extent of these deep channels and their ascent toward popliteal lymph nodes. Deep lymphatics matter in the leg because they mirror the deep venous system and provide the primary route for lymph drainage from deep tissues, including periosteum and the anterior compartment, toward popliteal and then deep inguinal nodes. For surgical and interventional planning, that adjacency to the anterior tibial vessels is the point: postoperative lymphatic leak, lymphocele, or persistent lower-limb edema can follow trauma, orthopedic fixation around the tibia, or vascular exposure at the anterior ankle. Keep the relationship with the deep fibular (peroneal) nerve in mind. It is tight.
