Description
Running superficially along the medial margin of the foot and leg, the great saphenous vein is traced in anterior view as it ascends from the dorsal venous arch, passes anterior to the medial malleolus, and continues proximally along the anteromedial tibia. Across the knee it remains medial, then tracks up the medial thigh toward the saphenous opening in the fascia lata to join the femoral vein just inferior to the inguinal ligament. Deep skeletal landmarks, including the pelvis, femur, patella, tibia, fibula, and the tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges, provide orientation for the vein’s course. Smaller superficial tributaries are shown converging into the main channel. An anterior depiction of the great saphenous vein matters because it matches how the vessel is mapped on the skin for venous access and for surgery, where millimeters can separate the target vein from the saphenous nerve along the medial leg. Varicosities most often involve this superficial trunk and its tributaries, and the proximal junction at the saphenofemoral confluence is the key site assessed for reflux when planning endovenous ablation or surgical ligation. The relationship to the medial malleolus and medial femoral condyle makes this a clean teaching view for surface anatomy and for correlating duplex ultrasound findings with palpable landmarks.
