Seen from a posterior perspective in an adult male, the great saphenous vein is traced along the medial margin of the lower limb from the medial foot and leg toward the thigh, contrasted against the bony landmarks of the pelvis, femur, tibia, fibula, patellae, and the tarsals and metatarsals. Superficial tributaries spread across the posterior calf and drain toward the saphenous trunk, while deeper channels are suggested by the popliteal vein in the popliteal fossa and the femoral vein in the proximal thigh.
