Description
Centered on the palmar aspect of the male hand, the superficial transverse metacarpal ligament is rendered as a horizontal fibrous band spanning across the volar plates at the level of the metacarpal heads, just distal to the distal palmar crease. From an anterior perspective, the ligament sits superficial to the deeper transverse metacarpal ligament and the lumbricals, and it lies close to the flexor tendon sheaths as they enter the digits at the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints. Digital neurovascular bundles course on either side of the flexor apparatus, remaining more medial and lateral than the central ligamentous fibers. Skin and subcutaneous tissue are shown as the most superficial layer. A tight, palpable structure. Spatially, this band helps tether the palmar skin and fascial layers over the MCP region while limiting excessive splaying of the soft tissues during finger abduction and extension, which makes it a reliable surface landmark when teaching hand surface anatomy or planning a palmar approach. Surgeons working through Bruner-type zigzag incisions for MCP exposure or A1 pulley release must respect adjacent digital nerves and arteries that run near the ligament’s lateral margins, and inadvertent injury can complicate tendon gliding or sensibility. Fibroproliferative conditions such as Dupuytren disease may distort nearby palmar fascia and alter the apparent contour of transverse ligamentous bands at this level, which can confuse planes during dissection. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and hand surgery teaching modules to clarify the relationship between superficial palmar fibrous structures and the MCP joint line, or in operative technique guides discussing safe zones for palmar incisions and neurovascular protection.
