Description
Oriented to the palmar (volar) aspect of the male hand, this anterior view centers on the metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints where the volar plates form thick fibrocartilaginous reinforcements on the anterior joint capsule. Distal to the metacarpals, each volar plate lies immediately palmar to the head of a metacarpal or phalanx and proximal to the base of the next phalanx, blending laterally with the proper and accessory collateral ligaments. Flexor tendons course superficial to these plates within their digital fibrous sheaths, while proximally the flexor retinaculum (transverse carpal ligament) spans the carpus and contains the flexor tendons as they enter the palm. Dense fascia frames the field. Clinically, the volar plate is a primary restraint to hyperextension at the PIP and MCP joints, so its integrity is central to common “jammed finger” injuries and dorsal PIP dislocations with volar plate avulsion fractures from the base of the middle phalanx. This view also supports teaching of boutonniere and swan-neck deformity mechanics, where imbalance between extensor apparatus and volar restraints alters PIP and DIP posture. A small structure.
