Description
Along the left cardiac margin, the epicardium (lamina visceralis of the serous pericardium) forms a thin, glistening serosa that closely invests the myocardium from the base toward the apex. A lateral profile places the left ventricle dominant in the foreground, with the left atrial region superior and posterior, and the interventricular groove running obliquely toward the apex. Epicardial fat may be apparent as a superficial layer deep to the serosa, collecting along the atrioventricular and interventricular sulci where the coronary vessels course. The pericardial reflection at the roots of the great vessels sits superiorly, marking the transition from visceral to parietal serous pericardium. This lateral emphasis on the visceral pericardium matters when you need to teach or plan around the coronary surface anatomy.
