Anterior Demonstration of the Fundus of the Stomach

Description

Arising as the superior, dome-shaped portion of the gaster (ventriculus), the fundus is shown in anterior aspect, arching superior to the cardiac opening at the gastroesophageal junction. Medially, it abuts the abdominal esophagus and the cardia, while its lateral contour curves toward the left hemidiaphragm. Inferiorly, the fundus transitions into the body of the stomach along the greater curvature, with the lesser curvature coursing more medially toward the cardia. Orientation is unmistakably cranial on the left. Clinically, a clean anterior demonstration of the gastric fundus matters because this region commonly contains the gastric air bubble on upright radiographs and frequently becomes distended during bag-mask ventilation or upper endoscopy. It is also the typical site of fundic gland polyps and a key landmark in bariatric and antireflux surgery, where mobilization of the fundus and division of short gastric vessels are weighed against the risk of bleeding near the splenic hilum. Clear boundaries help when teaching how the fundus sits superior to the cardia yet remains contiguous with the body along the greater curvature. A constant landmark.
