Arising as the distal expansion of the stomach, the pyloric antrum is seen in anterior aspect as a widened chamber that tapers inferiorly and to the right toward the pyloric canal. Superiorly it is continuous with the body of the stomach, while distally it narrows at the incisura angularis region toward the pylorus and proximal duodenum. The greater curvature lies laterally and inferiorly, and the lesser curvature tracks along the superomedial border toward the hepatic side of the upper abdomen. A thickened pyloric wall is implied at the transition from antrum to canal. Anterior visualization of the pyloric region matters because it is where functional obstruction and mucosal disease often declare themselves: peptic ulceration near the pylorus can scar and narrow the channel, and edema from active ulcer disease can precipitate gastric outlet obstruction. Endoscopists commonly localize pathology by distinguishing the antrum from the pyloric canal and identifying the directionality toward the first part of the duodenum. Surgeons also rely on these landmarks during antrectomy or pyloroplasty, where preserving orientation to the lesser curvature and the duodenal bulb helps avoid malposition and tension at the gastroduodenal junction.
