Description
Anterior orientation highlights the sternocostal (anterior) surface of the heart while rotating enough to emphasize the left pulmonary surface (facies pulmonalis sinistra). The left ventricle dominates the left lateral contour and forms much of the inferior border, with the left atrial appendage projecting anteriorly and partially overlapping the proximal pulmonary trunk. Superiorly, the ascending aorta and pulmonary trunk sit anterior to the left atrium, while the right ventricle remains more medial and anterior against the sternum. Emphasizing the left external surface matters when you need to relate cardiac anatomy to the left lung and pericardium, because this is the area that contacts the mediastinal pleura and becomes clinically relevant in left-sided pericarditis, pleuropericardial adhesions, and surgical exposure during a left anterior thoracotomy. This obliquity also helps teach why the left ventricle drives the palpable apex beat in the left 5th intercostal space at the midclavicular line, and why cardiomegaly tends to expand the left cardiac silhouette on a frontal chest radiograph. A practical landmark. Common use cases include gross anatomy and cardiothoracic modules that compare cardiac surfaces and borders, and clinical teaching materials on cardiac silhouette interpretation, pericardiocentesis planning, and operative approaches to the pulmonary trunk and ascending aorta. Publishers can also pair it with labeled diagrams of the left pulmonary surface for atlases and exam preparation resources. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
