Description
Seen from the anterior aspect in an adult male, the stomach is shown invested by visceral peritoneum (gastric serosa) as a smooth, continuous outer coat over the fundus, body, and antrum, with the lesser curvature directed superomedially and the greater curvature sweeping inferolaterally. Superior to the stomach sits the liver, while loops of jejunum and ileum occupy the central inferior abdomen and the large intestine frames them peripherally. Reflections of peritoneum at the gastric curvatures continue into the lesser omentum toward the liver and into the greater omentum descending from the greater curvature toward the transverse colon and anterior small bowel. Clean planes. Clear boundaries. That continuity matters in the operating room and on imaging because the omenta define the main peritoneal pathways for fluid, infection, and metastatic spread, and they also mark the dissection planes used to enter the lesser sac. Opening the gastrocolic ligament along the greater curvature is the standard route for exposure of the posterior stomach and pancreas, while the hepatogastric ligament of the lesser omentum guides access to the lesser curvature and perigastric lymph node stations relevant to gastric cancer staging. Peritoneal irritation over the stomach can also localize pain patterns in peptic ulcer disease and peritonitis, and this anterior serosal view helps distinguish intraperitoneal stomach from retroperitoneal neighbors. Use this illustration in gross anatomy teaching to anchor the difference between visceral and parietal peritoneum and to explain how peritoneal reflections form mesenteries and omenta in the upper abdomen.
