Description
Radiating from a septate hyphal filament, a conidiophore rises and expands distally into a terminal vesicle, from which phialides project in a crown-like array. Chains of conidia extend outward from the phialides, producing the characteristic beaded, dandelion-like head seen in many Aspergillus species. Proximally, the conidiophore remains narrow and stem-like; distally, the spore-bearing apparatus broadens and becomes densely packed. Green pigmentation suggests a common laboratory appearance for Aspergillus conidia, whether intrinsic or stain-related. Clear landmarks. Recognition of the conidiophore, vesicle, phialides, and conidial chains is the practical route to distinguishing Aspergillus from other filamentous molds on microscopy and culture. That distinction matters clinically because inhaled conidia can drive allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, form a fungus ball (aspergilloma) in a pre-existing lung cavity, or invade blood vessels in neutropenic or transplant patients, where tissue infarction and hemorrhage follow angioinvasion.
