Description
Prominent in the field is a conidial head of Aspergillus, centered on a stout conidiophore that rises from the filamentous hyphal network. At the distal end, the vesicle expands into a spore-bearing surface ringed by phialides, from which chains of round conidia bud outward and form the granular, light green crown. Beneath and around this reproductive structure, septate hyphae branch at acute angles and interlace into a web-like mycelium. Morphology matters with Aspergillus because the diagnostic pattern is structural, not just taxonomic. Branching septate hyphae with acute angle dichotomy are the classic histopathology correlate in invasive aspergillosis, while abundant airborne conidia explain the organism’s prominence in allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis and asthma exacerbations. Seeing the conidial head in situ also supports teaching around laboratory identification, since conidial architecture (vesicle, phialides, conidia arrangement) underpins differentiation from other molds when cultures are examined.
