Description
Suspended in plasma, a single eosinophil (a granulocyte class leukocyte, WBC) occupies the center of the frame, its cell membrane forming an irregular, slightly ruffled contour consistent with a motile circulating cell. Within the cytoplasm, dense coarse granules cluster toward the interior, while the background falls out of focus into a red-pink field suggestive of surrounding erythrocytes and the vascular milieu. The eosinophil’s granular cytoplasm sits peripheral to the nucleus region, with the overall cell volume appearing larger than nearby formed elements implied by the color field. Eosinophil morphology is a teaching anchor because its large specific granules, classically eosinophilic on Wright-Giemsa stain, correlate with effector functions in type 2 inflammation and helminth defense. Clinically, increased eosinophils in peripheral blood are tracked in allergic asthma, drug hypersensitivity reactions, eosinophilic esophagitis, and parasitic infection, and they can also flag hematologic disease such as hypereosinophilic syndrome or myeloid neoplasms.
