Description
Rendered as a single human granulocyte against a white field, the cell shows a bilobed nucleus positioned centrally with two lobes connected by a thin chromatin bridge. Coarse, refractile cytoplasmic granules fill the perinuclear cytoplasm and extend to the cell periphery, partially obscuring the nuclear contours in places. The plasma membrane forms a smooth, round to slightly irregular outline consistent with a circulating leukocyte in a blood smear context. Granule coloration and nuclear segmentation align with an eosinophil phenotype rather than a basophil, despite the title. That distinction matters in day-to-day hematology. Eosinophils characteristically display large eosinophilic (reddish-pink) specific granules and a bilobed nucleus, while basophils more often have dark basophilic granules that can mask an S-shaped nucleus on Wright-Giemsa stains; confusing the two can mislead interpretation when working up eosinophilia in helminth infection, drug hypersensitivity, asthma, or eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis. Morphology still anchors automated differentials when flags appear. Granule burden and nuclear shape are the quick checks.
