Description
Shown from a right lateral perspective, the visceral surface of the male liver is profiled to emphasize the colic impression, a shallow concavity where the hepatic flexure and proximal transverse colon abut the inferior aspect of the right lobe. The contour sits inferior to the diaphragmatic surface and lateral to the gallbladder fossa, forming part of the topography that also relates medially to the porta hepatis region. Subtle grooves and surface markings help distinguish this colonic contact area from adjacent visceral impressions on the inferior liver. Orientation to the colic impression matters when teaching peritoneal relationships and when interpreting cross sectional imaging of the right upper quadrant, where the colon can project against the liver and simulate a hepatic margin deformity or apparent lesion.
