Description
Posteriorly oriented on the visceral surface of the male liver, the colic impression (impressio colica) appears as a shallow indentation on the inferior aspect of the right lobe. It lies lateral to the porta hepatis and gallbladder fossa, and sits inferior to the bare area where the liver abuts the diaphragm. The marking corresponds to the hepatic flexure of the colon as it turns from ascending to transverse colon, creating a gentle groove along the posteroinferior hepatic surface. This posterior perspective matters because contact impressions on the liver help you map peritoneal relationships and anticipate where pathology can track. Colonic distension at the hepatic flexure can exaggerate the colic impression, and inflammatory processes such as right-sided colonic diverticulitis or Crohn disease may involve adjacent peritoneum and mimic hepatobiliary pain patterns.
