Description
Anterior sectioning through the adult female urinary bladder exposes the lumen and mucosa with rugae, the underlying detrusor muscle bundles, and the outer subserosa (tela subserosa) as a connective tissue layer deep to the peritoneal covering on the superior surface. Toward the inferoposterior bladder base, the trigone appears as a smoother mucosal region bounded by the ureteric orifices and the internal urethral orifice, while the bladder neck narrows inferiorly toward the urethra. Laterally, the subserosal plane blends into perivesical connective tissue where vessels and autonomic nerves course toward the bladder wall. Orientation stays anterior, so the anterior bladder wall and dome sit closest to the viewer, with posterior relations implied behind the sectioned cavity. Subserosa matters when you are teaching or planning dissection planes around the bladder because it defines where peritoneum reflects and where perivesical fat and fascia begin, a distinction that guides mobilization during suprapubic cystotomy and open or robotic pelvic surgery. Edema, hemorrhage, or tumor extension can track along this connective tissue compartment, and differentiating subserosal spread from muscular invasion changes staging in urothelial carcinoma. Clean planes. Messy consequences when they are violated.
