Anterior section through the adult female urinary bladder exposes the detrusor (musculus detrusor vesicae) with emphasis on its internal longitudinal layer immediately deep to the urothelium and lamina propria. Longitudinal smooth muscle bundles course along the inner bladder wall from dome to base, while deeper strata of the detrusor transition into interlacing circular and external longitudinal fibers that thicken toward the bladder neck. Inferiorly, the detrusor converges around the internal urethral orifice, continuous with proximal urethral smooth muscle, and posteriorly the trigone region appears as a smoother, less trabeculated zone between the ureteric orifices. Orientation is clear. Detrusor layer anatomy matters when you teach or plan interventions around bladder outlet function and compliance. Overactivity and impaired relaxation of the detrusor underlie common patterns of urge urinary incontinence, and the inner longitudinal fibers become a useful teaching handle for understanding coordinated shortening during voiding and the development of trabeculation in chronic outlet obstruction. This sectional anterior profile also supports surgical and endoscopic discussions, because plane recognition at the bladder neck and proximal urethra informs catheterization, urethral dilation, and evaluation for iatrogenic injury during gynecologic procedures.
