Description
Running transversely across the posterior wall of the adult female urinary bladder, the interureteric crest (interureteric ridge) forms a mucosal bar connecting the right and left ureteric orifices at the superolateral angles of the trigone. Inferior to this ridge, the smooth vesical trigone slopes toward the internal urethral orifice at the bladder neck, while superiorly the rugae of the bladder body become more prominent as the mucosa transitions away from the trigonal area. Laterally, the ureteric orifices sit at the ends of the crest, and the ridge defines the superior border of the trigone in standard anatomical position. Orientation to the interureteric crest matters any time you work in the trigone. During cystoscopy, it is a reliable landmark for locating the ureteric orifices before ureteral catheterization or stent placement, and it helps the operator maintain midline as the scope approaches the bladder neck. This relationship becomes practical in cases of vesicoureteral reflux, ureterocele, or iatrogenic ureteric injury, where subtle displacement or distortion around the ureteric orifices can change the expected geometry of the ridge and trigone. Small structure, big consequences.
