Description
Arising on the internal surface of the adult female urinary bladder, the interureteric crest (plica interureterica) forms a transverse mucosal ridge that spans between the right and left ureteric orifices at the posterior bladder wall. Immediately inferior lies the vesical trigone (trigonum vesicae), a smooth triangular area bounded by the two ureteric orifices superolaterally and the internal urethral orifice inferiorly. Superior to the crest, the bladder mucosa transitions into more mobile rugae as it approaches the dome, while laterally the intramural ureters tunnel obliquely through the bladder wall before opening into the lumen. This posterior bladder landmark matters because it fixes the base of the trigone, where ureteric jets enter and where reflux, obstruction, or iatrogenic injury has direct consequences for the upper urinary tract. During cystoscopy, the interureteric ridge helps orient the operator to the ureteric orifices and to the interureteric bar, a practical reference when assessing ureterovesical junction competence or placing ureteral stents. Small shifts in these relationships can signal trigonal inflammation, postsurgical distortion after anti-incontinence procedures, or mass effect from adjacent pelvic pathology. Orientation is everything.
