Description
From an anterior perspective, the male auricle (pinna) is presented with the concha as the dominant central depression, bounded laterally by the helix and medially by the antihelix as it bifurcates into superior and inferior crura. Superiorly, the scaphoid fossa tracks between helix and antihelix toward the apex, while the triangular fossa sits between the crura of the antihelix. Inferiorly, the lobule occupies the soft, noncartilaginous pole, continuous superiorly with the antitragus and separated from the tragus by the intertragic notch; the tragus forms the anterior cartilaginous projection that partially overlies the entrance to the external acoustic meatus. Cartilage contours read clearly. This anterior view matters because it aligns with how clinicians inspect external ear morphology at the bedside and how surgeons plan incisions that respect the helical rim and preserve conchal cartilage. Otoplasty for prominent ear often targets the antihelical fold and conchal excess, and this angle lets you judge the antihelix-to-concha relationship that drives auricular projection. It also supports teaching of auricular landmarks used for regional anesthesia around the auriculotemporal nerve and great auricular nerve, and for describing congenital variants such as microtia or prominent tragus/antitragus asymmetry.
