Description
Anterior soft tissues of the male auricle are rendered to isolate the musculus helicis minor (minor helical muscle), a slender auricular muscle lying on the anterosuperior pinna along the root of the helix (crus helicis) and adjacent scapha. Its fibers run obliquely within the superficial fascia, superficial to the auricular cartilage and just superior to the conchal rim, with the tragus and external acoustic meatus positioned inferomedially. A semi-transparent auricle permits simultaneous orientation to deeper ear anatomy. By pairing the helicis minor with a cutaway of the labyrinth, the plate supports a common teaching pitfall: students often learn the auricular muscles as trivia and miss their relationship to the auricular cartilage and to otologic surgical corridors. This view also clarifies why small preauricular and superior auricular incisions (for endaural approaches, preauricular fistula or cyst excision, or cartilage graft harvest) can intersect thin muscular slips and superficial sensory nerves, leading to postoperative tenderness or dysesthesia around the helix.
