Description
Along the anterosuperior rim of the auricle, the musculus helicis major (major helical muscle) tracks parallel to the helix as a thin band of striated fibers embedded in the superficial auricular musculature. From an elevated, oblique perspective, the helix and adjacent scapha sit lateral to the temporal region, while the muscle fibers run in close apposition to the auricular cartilage rather than spanning toward the external acoustic meatus. Posteriorly and superiorly, the surrounding auricular muscles blend into the soft tissues overlying the temporal fascia and periosteum of the temporal bone. Small structure, clear orientation. Attention to the helicis major matters because it is one of the few named intrinsic muscles of the pinna, and it frequently gets simplified or omitted in teaching diagrams of the external ear. In otoplasty and auricular reconstruction, surface landmarks such as the contour of the helix and the definition of the scapha depend on cartilage shaping and soft tissue tension, so distinguishing intrinsic auricular muscle fibers from perichondrium helps when discussing dissection planes and scar placement. This view also supports discussions of vestigial auricular movement and why many patients cannot voluntarily move the pinna despite intact regional innervation.
