Description
Running obliquely within the superficial tissues over the superior helix, the minor helical muscle (musculus helicis minor) appears as a small, discrete bundle associated with the anterior aspect of the auricle (pinna). Its fibers sit deep to the auricular skin and superficial to the elastic cartilage of the helix, near the root and superior spine of the helix, with the scapha and antihelix positioned posterior and medial in the same field. Adjacent auricular muscles along the lateral scalp and temporal region are suggested by striated fiber texture, while the tragus and conchal bowl lie inferior and slightly posterior to the emphasized helical margin. Tiny anatomy. Big landmark. An anterior perspective makes sense for this structure because the intrinsic auricular muscles are easiest to teach when you can relate them to the helix contour that clinicians palpate and surgeons preserve. The minor helical muscle is clinically modest in function, but it sits in the same superficial plane used for otoplasty approaches, helical rim reconstruction, and local flap planning, where dissection just under the skin risks contour deformity of the helix if the perichondrium and overlying soft tissues are mishandled. Inclusion of deeper ear elements in the same composition also helps clarify that the intrinsic muscles are strictly external ear structures and should not be conflated with the middle and inner ear apparatus when teaching regional anatomy.
