Seen in lateral perspective, the root of the nose (radix nasi) lies superior to the dorsum nasi and inferior to the glabella, forming the nasal bridge at the junction of the frontal bone and paired nasal bones. Anteriorly, the skin and subcutaneous tissues drape over the nasofrontal suture, while posterior to the bony bridge the upper nasal cartilages contribute to the proximal contour of the dorsum. The root sits medial to the medial canthus and lacrimal sac region, with the nasal sidewall descending inferolaterally toward the alar region. Male soft-tissue thickness at the nasion commonly produces a straighter profile line. Precise localization of the nasion and radix matters in both trauma and facial surgery because this is where nasal bone fractures often propagate and where closed reduction forces are applied. A clean lateral view also supports rhinoplasty planning, since dorsal hump reduction, radix augmentation, and osteotomy lines are judged relative to the nasofrontal angle and the transition from forehead to nasal dorsum. Small changes here read as large changes in profile. It is also a practical landmark for external assessment in suspected nasoethmoidal injuries, where medial canthal displacement and telecanthus can accompany deeper disruption.
