Description

Seen in profile on an adult male, the root of the nose (radix nasi) forms the superior aspect of the nasal bridge where the paired nasal bones meet the frontal bone at the frontonasal suture. The nasion lies in the midline at this junction, immediately inferior to the glabella, which marks the smooth prominence of the frontal bone between the superciliary arches. Superior to the radix, the forehead contour transitions across the glabellar region, while inferiorly the bridge descends toward the dorsum nasi. For facial analysis, the nasion is a fixed craniofacial landmark used to assess nasal projection and the nasofrontal angle, a common planning metric in rhinoplasty and forehead reconstruction. Minor shifts at the radix can change the perceived length and height of the nose, so surgeons often reference the nasion-glabella relationship when augmenting a low radix, reducing a dorsal hump, or evaluating post-traumatic deformity after nasal bone fracture. Anthropometric measurement and cephalometric tracing also rely on this point. Small but unforgiving. Use this asset in head and neck gross anatomy teaching to anchor surface anatomy landmarks, in plastic surgery and ENT materials discussing rhinoplasty planning, and in medical publishing for chapters on craniofacial anthropometry and facial proportions in adult males. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
