Description
Lateral aspect of the stomach (gaster, ventriculus) emphasizes the tunica serosa, the visceral peritoneal coat that invests the organ as a smooth, glistening outer layer. Along the greater curvature, the serosa reflects inferiorly to continue into the greater omentum, while along the lesser curvature it turns medially toward the lesser omentum and the hepatogastric ligament. Superiorly the serosal surface approaches the cardia and fundus beneath the left hemidiaphragm, and inferiorly it continues over the body toward the pyloric region. Seeing the serosa in profile matters because it frames where the stomach is mobile versus tethered, and where peritoneal reflections become operative planes. Surgeons exploit these planes during partial gastrectomy, pyloroplasty, and laparoscopic mobilization along the greater curvature, where staying on the serosal surface helps avoid injury to the gastroepiploic vessels within the adjacent omental apron. Breach of this layer and local contamination is also the anatomic basis for why an anterior gastric ulcer perforation can spill into the greater sac, while posterior disease tracks toward the lesser sac.
