Description
Posterior gastric anatomy is presented from a dorsal perspective, with color blocks distinguishing the cardia, fundus, corpus (body), antrum pyloricum, and pylorus along the lesser and greater curvatures. Superiorly, the fundus rises to the left of the cardia, while the corpus descends inferiorly toward the antrum, which narrows medially into the pyloric canal. The posterior wall relationships are implied by this orientation: the lesser curvature lies more medial and superior, and the greater curvature sweeps lateral and inferior as it approaches the pyloric region. For teaching, the posterior surface matters because it is the surface that rests on the stomach bed, where surgical dissection and posterior gastric pathology meet adjacent organs. On this side, the pancreas sits posterior to the stomach with the lesser sac (omental bursa) interposed, and posterior gastric ulcers can penetrate into the pancreas and present as back pain rather than classic epigastric tenderness.
