Description
Left lung bronchi are presented with emphasis on the lateral basal segmental bronchus (B9) of the lower lobe, arising distally from the left lower lobar bronchus and tracking inferolaterally toward the posterolateral lung parenchyma. From an anterior thoracic orientation, the segmental origin sits inferior to the superior segmental bronchus (B6) and lateral to the medial basal distribution (often combined as an anteromedial basal trunk on the left), with the airway caliber tapering as it approaches the peripheral bronchopulmonary segment. Adjacent segmental bronchi for the anterior basal (B8) and posterior basal (B10) segments are logically nearby, separated by intersegmental planes that clinicians reference during segmental resection. B9 matters because the left lower lobe bronchial branching pattern is a common source of navigation error during bronchoscopy and during endobronchial interventions. Precise identification of the lateral basal bronchus helps target sampling in suspected lower lobe malignancy, localize mucus plugging in aspiration or postoperative atelectasis, and anticipate the segmental distribution of infection in bronchopneumonia.
