Description

Right lower lobe bronchial anatomy is presented with emphasis on the lateral basal segmental bronchus (B9) of the right lung. Arising from the inferior lobar (lower lobe) bronchus, B9 courses inferolaterally within the lower lobe, directing airflow toward the lateral portion of the diaphragmatic surface and the posterolateral parenchyma. Nearby segmental branches, including the superior segmental bronchus (B6) and the anterior and posterior basal bronchi (B8 and B10), sit more superior or more posterior relative to B9 depending on their takeoff from the basal bronchial trunk. Orientation at the segmental level matters because the bronchopulmonary segments are surgical units, each supplied by its own segmental bronchus and accompanying segmental pulmonary artery branch, with intersegmental pulmonary veins running in the connective tissue planes between segments.
