Description
Posterior thoracic anatomy is oriented to emphasize the superior (apical) segments of both lungs, color-coded against the surrounding parenchyma. Each apical segment sits at the lung apex, superior to the oblique fissure and posterior to the upper lobe bronchovascular tree, with the left superior segment rising slightly higher in the dome beneath the clavicular region. From this dorsal viewpoint the lower lobe dominates the field, and the oblique fissure forms a clear inferolateral boundary separating the upper lobe from the superior segment of the lower lobe. Segmental limits are implied by fissural planes and by the typical wedge-like geometry of bronchopulmonary segments. Posterior segmental anatomy matters when you need to localize disease to a bronchopulmonary segment rather than a whole lobe, because that is how bronchoscopy reports, CT readouts, and operative plans often communicate. The superior segment of the lower lobe (S6) is a common site for aspiration-related consolidation in recumbent patients and for postinfectious bronchiectasis, and its proximity to the oblique fissure can make fissure-based spread or confinement a teaching point on cross-sectional imaging. Resections follow segmental bronchi and accompanying pulmonary arteries. This is the road map. Use this illustration in pulmonary anatomy and radiologic correlation teaching, including CT segment mapping of the left lower lobe, or in surgical education for VATS segmentectomy planning and documentation. It also fits well in atlases, journal figures, and patient-facing materials that need a clean dorsal view of apical and superior segments.
