Description
Arising from the pulmonary trunk, the right pulmonary artery is presented in posterior perspective as it courses laterally toward the right lung hilum, its proximal segment lying posterior to the ascending aorta and anterior to the right main bronchus. The vessel’s gentle inferior and lateral sweep is appreciable before it would normally divide into lobar branches, which are intentionally omitted to isolate the main pulmonary arterial trunk. Spatially, the artery sits superior to the left atrium and posterior to the pericardial reflection around the great vessels. Clean anatomy. No distracting tributaries. Orientation of the right pulmonary artery is a frequent point of confusion in cross sectional teaching because it does not mirror the left side, and its relationship to the ascending aorta becomes a practical landmark when correlating CT angiography or operative anatomy. This posterior view clarifies why enlarged right pulmonary arteries in pulmonary hypertension can indent adjacent airway, and it supports discussion of hilar dissection planes during right pneumonectomy or sleeve resections where the artery must be controlled proximal to its lobar branching.
