Description
Sagittal sectioning through the uterus places the endometrium in profile, with the glandulae uterinae seen as tortuous tubular structures extending from the luminal surface toward the endometrial stroma near the endometrial myometrial junction. Superficial gland openings face the uterine cavity, while deeper gland segments course inferiorly and posteriorly within the functional layer and basalis. Peripheral to the mucosa, the myometrium forms a thick muscular wall, and the serosal contour lies most external. Gland architecture in sagittal plane matters because it is the easiest way to teach the cyclic remodeling of the endometrium across the proliferative and secretory phases, where straight glands become coiled and secretory under progesterone. This view also supports clinical interpretation of abnormal uterine bleeding: endometrial hyperplasia increases gland to stroma ratio, while endometritis introduces inflammatory change and can distort gland lumina. For procedural context, many diagnostic samples are obtained by endometrial biopsy or curettage, and correlating what is sampled with gland depth helps explain false negatives when pathology is focal or limited to the basalis.
