Description
From a superior survey angle, the right hepatic lobe (lobus hepatis dexter) is oriented to emphasize the posterior lateral sector, bringing the diaphragmatic surface into primary view while the visceral surface remains largely inferior and out of plane. Segment VI (Couinaud), positioned posteroinferiorly and laterally, occupies the outer margin of the right lobe, with segment VII lying superior and posterior to it toward the dome. Medially, the plane toward the right hepatic vein marks the boundary with the right paramedian territory, while the bare area sits posterosuperiorly where peritoneal reflection gives way to direct contact with the diaphragm. Clean segmental geography. That relationship matters when you plan a limited right-sided resection or ablation. Lesions in segments VI and VII often sit deep to the costal margin and close to the right hepatic vein and short hepatic veins, so the operative corridor and bleeding risk differ from more anterior segments. A superior perspective also maps well onto how segment VII tumors appear on axial CT and MRI, where the posterolateral dome can be underestimated without a clear mental model of the hepatic venous landmarks. Use this asset in hepatobiliary surgery and radiology teaching to orient Couinaud segment localization, to annotate operative atlases describing wedge resection versus segmentectomy in the right posterior section, or to support journal figures discussing tumor burden distribution in the male liver.
