Abductor Hallucis, Medial View

Description

Running along the medial border of the right foot, the abductor hallucis (abductor hallucis muscle) forms the most superficial muscular contour from the medial process of the calcaneal tuberosity toward the base of the proximal phalanx of the hallux. Its belly lies plantar and slightly inferior to the medial malleolus, where the tibia and fibula frame the ankle mortise, and it courses anteriorly parallel to the medial longitudinal arch. Deep to it, the plantar aponeurosis and the first layer of intrinsic muscles transition toward flexor hallucis brevis and the tendinous structures entering the great toe, while posteriorly the triceps surae converge into the calcaneal (Achilles) tendon inserting on the calcaneus. A medial view of abductor hallucis matters because it anchors the soft tissue architecture of the medial plantar compartment and acts as a practical surface landmark for the neurovascular bundle. The medial plantar nerve and artery travel in the same compartment, and entrapment near the abductor hallucis fascia is a recognized cause of medial plantar nerve symptoms, often discussed alongside jogger’s foot and proximal tarsal tunnel presentations. This angle also clarifies why selective release or compartment decompression is performed along the medial calcaneal region and why tendon transfers and hallux valgus corrective procedures must respect the medial plantar structures.
